Okay... so what started off as me and my buddy going down to NC to dive has no turned into a "girlfriend accompanied, lets stay down in Carolina for a week and rent a beach house trip" !!!!!!!

Anyway... I just trying to figure out Morehead vs Hatteras/Nags Head simply on the basis of diving quality but now I have some other factors as well. I was leaning towards Morehead City because of warmer waters, but I am now being told that there is nothing else to do, no beaches, bars, restaurants etc down there and there is a lto more to do in Nags Head/ Cape Hatteras.

So my questions are...
1. What are the water temps REALLY like in Hatteras/Nags Head in July and August.
2. What is the social life like in Morehead?
3. I also thought all 3 of these places were fairly close to together but now I am hearing that they are 3 hours or so apart. Comments?

Thanks... gotta love big mouthed buddies and their clingy girlfriends ;) (who I know don't read Scubaboard)

Despite being close by Hatteras and Nags Head are very different areas to dive in. Hatteras will be in the low 70's while Nags Head in the low 60's or upper 50's on the bottom.

I don't know who you get your info from, but Altantic Beach is minutes from Morehead City. Along the same stretch of island you can find Pine Knoll Shores and Emerald Isle. There is as much tourist crap to do around Morehead City as anywhere else in NC. I cite parasailing as evidence.

Nags Head, Hatteras, and Morehead all have different feels, but they all get plenty of tourists.

So basically Nag's Head is 7mm or dry suit only...
Hatteras is possible with a 3-5
Morehead is easily doable with a 3

Thanks a bunch... women be damned I'm going diving and I don't like cold water so Morehead it is!!!!

Of course I talk big here but will porbably get beat up enough to compromise on Hatteras. At least I can then say that I have choice but to buya 5mm!!

If you are coming to dive Hatteras in July/August, leave the heavy suits at home. The water is already 80 on the top and high 70s at depth. In July/Aug it will be 84 top close to 80 on bottom. You will find the water conditions in Hatteras equal to Morehead and many times much better on the inshore dives. Check the 41025 bouy just north of the shoals for current surface temps.

as others stated in july , AUG you will only tops need a 3 mm suit from may to oct I use my 3mm hyperstretch all the time

You'd better book your dives now. So often the boats are booked that besides your "woman be damned" bit. You may not be able to get on a boat.

Besides, we're gonna make sure she see's that post just to make sure you have to grovel and squirm for a while. :eyebrow:
