My reg came with the ComfoBite mouthpiece. I hated it- found it very irritating to the palate. Gave it about ten or fifteen dives and then replaced it with a mouthpiece with a long bite. Much happier now.

Hi 6gill,

I also use the SeaCure. In order for you to use it you must use your dentures and customize the bite to them.

The reason you see recommendations against doing so is because it is possible for the denture to be displaced by a blast of air and then it can obstruct the airway. If you had to share air with your SeaCure you run the risk of losing your denture and the lucky buddy may either find some teeth embedded in your reg or an oddly shaped regulator which won't fit very well. Actually, anyone using a custom bite would be donating a regulator that is not comfortable for anyone else.

While I must recommend not diving with a denture, I appreciate that it would be embarrassing to dive without them and the you may very well be more comfortable with them. It's kind of like telling a denture patient not to sleep with them....OK, that's another story.

Regards,

Larry Stein

Yes, I do have my Secure fitted to my dentures and except for the things that I have already mentioned, I have no problems with it. I have tried it without dentures and found that it was VERY uncomforiable this way, as well as not to secure in the mouth. I don't think there is really much reason to fear a "blast of air" dislodging my dentures, etc. I don't think even a "free flow" would be enough to cause this. Looking at your statement and the way it reads, etc. I feel its one of those CYA things. I can understand that. I do not plan on passing my primarey to OOA divers and with my dentures in and a grip on the Secure mouth piece I don't thing the OOA diver is going to snatch it easily. I plan on passing my Octo (Z-1 w/Yellow plate) to any OOA divers. I keep a regular mouth piece on it. (Although its one I can use too.) I had to visit my LDS today and looked up and tried the Comfobite mouth piece. I tried it with and without dentures and found that without the dentures it was very hard to keep in my mouth and uncomfotable. With dentures, it was usable, however; I like the Secure better. I have not tried or even really seen the Manta mouth piece, however the reviews as well as the info on their web site as to how to use it, etc. didn't sound like something I would like. So, I continue to dive with dentures in and a good grip on my Secure mouth piece. :bounce:

Ya, CYA...yup!

Like I say, I can appreciate.... Actually, Bernouli's Principle is the reason the dentures might be displaced. It's just like a wing...air (or any fluid) moving over a surface reduces the pressure at right angles to the surface it is flowing over. On a wing this is called lift. On a denture it's called #%$&% that darned dentist!

Hey, whatever you're comfortable with.

I will tell you from personal experience, a shared regulator may not be YOUR choice and your octopus may not be the choice regulator. You should also know that the person looking for your regulator can become stronger than you can clamp down on your mouthpiece!!!!

Have a good one.

Perhaps Larry this might be true, however; I will resist it as best as I can! :maniac: :Wizard:

LS DDS, sorry I missed the part about the dentures... I have a Sea Cure and also a reg that has a ComfoBite. I don't have any problems with either, and now that I am more relaxed when I dive (compared to when I started), I have no problems with a standard mouthpiece for dives that are well over an hour long. One of my LDS's current students though, has a big problem with a ComfoBite. ComfoBite goes into their mouth, say hi to 'Ralph' - almost instantaneously. That's where I was coming from with the gag reflex comment. I've never seen it before this student, but it's quite dramatic :)

Hi, I meant to ask...as a DDS do you recommend sleeping with dentures in or out?

Thanks to all of you especially you Dr. Stein for the advice. I have ordered the Manta-Bite and my Husband brought home the Comfo-Bite from the LDS. I will try them both and see which works the best for me. I'll post and let you all know what I like or don't like about both of them.
