Hi guys, first thanks for all the great info and advice on all the boards, have learned a lot (I hope). Quick question, I had picked up a used delta 3 reg a few months ago and it has a cracked diaphragm cover, the diaphragm itself is in great condition, no sharp edges on the cover, just a crack, other o rings and fittings sparkling clean and the cover already has several opening, was never water tight, and the reg breaths great. question is should i try to source another diaphragm cover before I get wet or is this not that important in your opinion? If I win the lottery i'll gift the gear to someone and buy all new but for now with my budget want to stretch it if I safely can.

thanks

I'm pretty sure the cover just holds the 2nd stage diaphragm in place and prevents the whole force of the water column from pushing on it, and thereby causing a freeflow, in a current or if you're moving fast.

As long as it's not going to cut the diaphragm, I don't see a danger.

I agree with Michael. If it's not going to result in a leak, or fall off while in the water, then it should be fine. If it's plastic, you might be able to glue it back together, if you can get it very clean. Between dives, see if you can find a replacement cover, maybe on Craig's List, or ebay, or you could just give it a couple of wraps of electrical tape, until you hit the lotto.

thanks for the advice and input guys. I ended up being able to find a cover on ebay for another delta reg that fit. thanks again

I don't advise people to dive with damaged or untested gear, however I rarely take my own advice. When diving with questionable equipment, I am very careful and have a bail out plan should anything go wrong. I usually dive shallower or take a [-]trusted[/-] tested buddy or a pony.

I read this to say that you still dive carefully - taking reasonable steps to mitigate any possible problem should one arise. So the equipment might be faulty but your planning expands to take account of it making sure that the dive is still safe.

Hope for the best/plan for the worst.
