Your not.doing zero to hero. Zero to hero is OW to instructor as fast as possible with the minimum number of dives.

Does having a Divemaster cert or an Assistant Instructor cert or an Instructor cert expose you to increased liability while you're working on this scientific project? If so, then should you endeavor to undergo the most thorough training available to you--even if you aren't expecting to function as a DM, AI, or Instructor?

OP, what is your certification level right now?
Do you need to get to OWSI or will AI suffice?
Does it have to be PADI?
One issue is that once you get the cert, then you can operate at that level.....which might be not so good for you or whomever you are dealing with. Your "promise not to ever use the credential" made on an internet forum is not so compelling.
Logistically, I suspect you can do what you want to do. Much of the material is now eLearning.
