Im sure any shop will be happy to put together a private DM class for you. It'll cost an arm and a leg and probably won't be very good, since DM is all about working with other people.

I think you would have a better outcome if you figure out what you are actually looking for from a training standpoint. It sounds like DM is not what you really want.

Imagine you are at the end of your class. What have you learned and what new skills to do you have? Once you know that, you can figure out what direction you want to go.

This is for a research project I'm working on - a DM certification is just a project requirement. I won't actually be doing DM-type stuff. I know this is an unusual situation, which is why I figured I might have to do private or the like. I'm okay if it's more expensive than a typical DM course.

Contact the major teaching ops and pitch your idea, ask for estimates. I'm sure you can find someone to do what you want, but, at what cost? You have your prerequisites?

We have used Dive Friends last 5 visits, they have 7 locations, do a lot of teaching. Many other good ops, others can give their recommendations.

A 2 week DM course is actually quite fast ..!

For the practical assesements, you /need/ to assist in courses. You /need/ to work with certified divers. The dive school needs to run those classes, otherwise you cant be signed off. If you don't want to work with real students, it's going to take at least 4 staff members to simulate. I don't think any dive school on the island is willing to do this. Maybe when we had the lockdown and no students. Now, most schools are fully booked.

For the workshops, in theory they could be done with just an instructor. I won't teach it that way, because it takes away the quality of the class.

A DM certification is a professional certification. That allows you to take responsibility over peope. Any instructor that "just gives it away" in a couple of days degrades the cert IMHO

A question is why is your program requiring a DM and preferably an Instructor cert? This could be helpful to know. Was the requirement put in place by a clueless person who thinks it’s a convenient way to guarantee skills or experience? Or by their insurance company? Or do they have another reason? Seems there are certs out there that might serve them better. Probably you can’t convince them to change requirements in time for whatever you are doing, but maybe it is worth looking into, suggesting an alternative. Scientific diver certification? Or whatever does make sense.

I see your side, but also why you are seeing lots of resistance to what you are looking for. (It looks like you deleted your posts, I assume because you didn’t like the answers. Leaving a thread that makes no sense and isn’t helpful to anyone including yourself.)

I’ve heard of other research type programs requiring DM cert, so it’s not unheard of. Not sure how common it is.

Yeah I’ve heard of it too. The question is, why? The OP said it didn’t make sense in this case. So is there a good reason the OP is unaware of, or a bad reason, or…?
