deerfield beach

we'll be down to Deerfield Beach, FL the first month of May. My wife is pregnant, so will not scuba on this trip, but can anyone recommend any snorkling spots in the near area?

can anyone comment on red reef park or the pier in deerfield beach?

Although I have not been at the park, people tell me it is a great place.

All the piers are great down here, except Anglin Pier at the end of Commercial blvd. It has been closed for about 3 months now.

Don't waste your money at Red Reef. I went there last summer with my daughter. $14/car to get in. Most of the artifical reef is covered in sand and the part you can actually snorkel will take you maybe 5 minutes. Waist deep at high tide, rocks exposed during low tide.
If you want to snorkel, go south past Commerical Blvd to Datura where there is a snorkeling trail. Or go further south to John U Lloyd park to the Erojacks. You dive and she can snorkel.
The first weekend of May is the air and sea show, and anybody who owns a boat will be out...and beach diving....Make sure you have a flag!!!!!!

South Florida Diving Headquarters or www.southfloridadiving.com has an awesome Snorkeling trip. This would be the way to go. Scuba and Snorklers on the same trip.

Here's a link to a shore site that I've heard people rave about. It is only about 15 minutes south of Deerfield if you take A1A along the coast.

That last post gives a great description of the dive site that we visit on the weekends. There's usually a group of divers there by 0830 or so. (Of course, many of us are going to Ginnie Springs this weekend!)

The area is reasonably shallow (15-20 ft), visibility has been pretty good (30-40 ft lately on average), and the swims haven't been too hard (this coming from a guy who loves to come in to shore underwater!)

Look on the Private Trips section here a few days before you come - that's where we usually decide what beach we'll dive and when. All of the ones that I've been on so far have been great - good dive buddies, healthy reefs.
