Deep Diving Specialty Vs Mid Depth Cold and Low Vis

I was just looking at Tec 40. One of the prerequisites IS the Deep Diver Specialty. Seems to me one comes before the other, it's not one OR the other. Or am I missing something?

(I'm a long way from considering Tec 40 or a related course, but would one day like to dive some deep WWII wrecks)

Actually, there's a prerequisite experience alternative for Tec40.... so you don't need Deep Diver necessarily.

PADI, predictably don't inform of that on their site. But it IS stated in the Tech Deep instructor manual.

I'll post that prerequisite when I'm next on my laptop (on my phone only right now). It's a combination of deep (18m/60ft+), nitrox and 30m/100ft dives logged experience.

I would think almost any dive op/instructor would give a diver custom instruction on a skill without going through a certification process. Just contact one, explain what you want, and see what they say.

Agreed. As John said... good tech instructors (and some rec, even) will provide custom clinics and workshops on specific skills, equipment or general development.

Tech instructors (good ones) tend to do lots of remediation or skill improvement work to help divers meet, or prepare for, the higher standards on tech courses. So they often become adept and familiar with providing 'non-certification' training.

Remember that Tec40 has only one single deco dive. The first three dives simulate.... and are mostly about ascent control, stop precision and gas switching.

The actual deco is 'only' a maximum of 10 minutes, not accelerated. That's perfect learning for how to do emergency decompression and introducing you to your computer's deco screen/behavior.

In contrast Deep Diver does 8 minutes simulated emergency deco... based on old tables protocols... no explanation of the deco theory, the computer behaviour... Or any refinement of stop or ascent precision. In short... An 8 minute safety stop, with no specific performance requirements of skill or competency..

Yep, amusingly PADI website says you have to be a PADI Deep Diver, but various dive ops add "or show proof of at least 10 dives to 30 metres/100 feet". That would make it an easy pre-requisite to meet.

Tec 40 Key Standards
Participant prerequisites: Certified as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or a
qualifying certification from another training organization, PADI Enriched Air Diver
or a qualifying certification from another training organization, PADI Deep Diver
or proof of 10 dives to 30 metres/100 feet, 18 years old, 30 logged dives (10 with
EANx, 7 deeper than 30 metres/100 feet).
