Deco tank SPG ** POLL **

I too would like to know how you could have a cylinder on your person that is leaking gas underwater and not know it, or rather, find out by the SPG needle dropping not by the fact that there is gas bubbling from somewhere directly around said SPG...

I know of at least 2 guys that have dumped their deco gas without knowing it. So whether or not you find it hard to believe, it has been done.

Were they scootering by chance? If not, that's a hell of a lot of gas to loose by either free flow or a very large leak to go unnoticed.

Very perceptive. Yes, they were both scootering and both believed that a deco reg should be left open.

And according to you, these guys don't use SPG's on their deco bottles either right? They are also blind to the bubble trail? They don't check on each other once in a while during the dive? I think you and your diving buddies have bigger problems than losing gas!

Actually I know how to do the whole quote thingy, but I didn't feel your ignorant answers were worth the time for me to copy and paste. And I apologize if I'm not as techy as you, I tend to spend my time diving in the WATER, not cyberdiving on my computer while sitting in my mother's basement and playing Warcraft.

Actually its quite easy to loose gas from a reg while scootering. And not know it if you're task loaded. And no its not that easy for the buddy to detect either since it may stop when people stop driving.

I have had a reg start to leak and noticed. I have known others who have had issues and not notice or have other tasks preoccupy them. You are awfully flippant thinking "it can't happen to you"

If you have an spg on your BG you should have it on your deco tank. The logic, pros/cons and trade-offs are exactly the same...

It could be argued that any diver who knows their SAC, depth and pay attention to their profile doesen´t need an spg. If something happens, you should notice. If you´re out of gas, you´re out of gas.

Well Mike, I can see by that statement you know nothing of Brian.

Your reading comprehension could use some work as well. If you will note Brian said he has seen many problems with folks being configured in ways displayed here in this thread, but he never said anything about it being with his team.

Brian tends to be a pretty smart guy, and smart guys ensure potential problems that they see with other teams do not affect their team by making them an impossibility by how they are configured in the first place. Running with deco bottles shut off is just such a situation. Kind of eliminates that potential problem right then and there.

Maybe you could spend at least half the time you used running your yap needlessly and incorrectly, and put it into some fact finding. All you had to do is ask the guy. I've never known Brian to be standoff-ish to those looking for answers to his way of thinking.


BTW, what are your predictions on the Toronto Maple Laughs?

I agree with you that you should have an SPG on your backgas, and stages. Since this is your delimiting factor at depth, and the basis of your actions and submerged duration during a dive. Actually, in the old dinosaur days, cave divers dove WITHOUT an SPG. Once they came out they checked the pressure in their tanks, and it would give them a good idea of how far they could go next time. That my friend, was some very hardcore diving.

My argument to the deco bottle only, is that if you really think about it, in a minimalist nature, the SPG is not really needed. Rjack brought up a great point with gas flowing while scootering. I agree that on such a dive profile, it would not be a bad idea to have the SPG on the deco gas. Although, I was taught, and I teach my students to pressurize their deco reg, then shut off the valve in order to aleviate any freeflow or gas loss issue. I believe that if this simple rule is followed, gas loss will not be an issue unless you blow a neck O-ring, or you roll off the valve on your deco bottle (not easy to do if the valve is near your left chest D-ring.

I'm not trying to change anyone's dive habits, just get them to think about it a little. It seems to me that most of you have an SPG on your Deco bottle. Did you think about the true need for it, or did you put it on the reg because everyone else has one on their deco bottle. Since you really DON'T need it on the dive, a deco bottle SPG is not really DIR is it? And not having one is right there with the HOG system... Or maybe not...

Just food for thought...

Yes he didn't specify either way. BTW his team is the Oilers, they need all the o2 they can get :11doh:

Nah... I enjoy running my yap. And I don't have anything against Brian other than he was generalizing and associating the "no spg" argument with other unrelated bad diving practices.
