I have been re-thinking my procedures. I don't think either of them are outright dangerous. I think they both ensure switching to the right gas, as far as anything can be certain underwater.

In light of this, I'll probably add the interruption test the way you do it before the buddy verification. However, if I am feeling particularly paranoid, I'll probably do my interruption test afterwards as an optional triple check. :D

rjack- I think you meant to say that you do the interruption test after you unstow the reg but before you actually breath it ;)

Isn't that what I said?

I grab the bottle I want to use and check the depth markings

I repressurize the reg prior to deployment (sometimes they lose a little) so that it doesn't twist on the DIN fitting. Hand's on the valve for that.

pull out the hose/2nd stage, the left hand is usless for deployment and stays on the valve

burp it with right hand my lefts on the valve

watch the needle drop hand still on the valve

check the depth again if I'm paranoid (hand still on the valve)

turn the valve on

switch regs

breath, if no gas I'm not on the bottle I thought I was.

Before:
pressurize
deploy
burp (with L hand on knob)
turn on (L hand still on knob)
switch
breath - no gas = screwup

I understood what you meant cuz you outlined it all. Perhaps my question was ambiguous in that you do the test before you breathe it, but after you unstow it ;) Good thing we're just cyber-diving!

Oh I see!

I don't think burp testing BEFORE deployment is all that useful. Until you have the reg in front of your mouth there are too many ways to get distracted and/or pick the wrong 2nd stage.

Checking and keeping you hand on the bottle throughout the deployment has worked for me. Yes there's an SPG on there. :)

No, you're probably right. I don't think either will kill you, but for me, I like having my own confirmation over anyone else (not that you shouldn't be able to trust your buddy), and the extra few seconds it takes to do this I don't believe to be significant, so I prefer doing it this way. I'm glad we had this discussion - I'm always open to hearing how to do things better.
