I was trained to put tanks evenly, left and right, with the key being: "Rich is Right!" The highest oxygen content gas goes on the right. Just my PPO2's worth.

Cheers!

I also use that method but if you have 1 deco bottle is it left or right?

I'm an entry level tech diver too. So far I have used one tank for deco gas and I sling it on the right. I have always rigged for breathing gas right. All regulators are routed to the right and following that convention I rig my deco bottle on the right side. I use a 40 or an 80 depending on the dive. I don't carry a canister light so I shift my lead such that I am balanced with tank slung. I never remove my bottles.

For my left bottle I use a ball swivel so the reg doesn't twist in my mouth. Another option is some regs can be rigged for left handed hose. Aqualung XLC and Scubapro R90 for example.

I like mine on the left.
However... the important thing is to do what your team agrees to do. There is no specific reason I can think of beyond personal rigging preference to prefer one side over the other - years ago I actually slung a deco bottle centered! - but the rig should be consistent within the team and be whatever best suits the team's needs & desires.

I think if I had to use a steel deco bottle I would still use center rigging

In the method I prefer, the first bottle goes left UNLESS it is a high O2 content bottle.

A Uncle Ricky pointed out, consistency of practice, and especially within a team or group is what is important!

Cheers!

You can carry a bunch that way especially if you hang one or two by the neck on your hip d-ring or even use a leash.

I've heard of using a leash, but I've never seen one. Could you describe how they are used. Are you just dragging a bunch of bottles behind you? How do you manage the bouyancy so that the bottles aren't dredging the bottom?

Your insight serves you well, young Skywalker...
It was a '72.
