One of the things you learn in the classes is to plan for the SNAFUs. I would wait until after the class to buy another computer. You'll probably move to helium at some point.

I was mainly thinking about the deco computer in case of a SNAFU. If I had to abort the dive early, I would rather do the lesser deco that the computer calculated on the fly.
Maybe thats not what is done in real-world. Although I guess I SHOULD control my enthusiasm and take the course, before I decide on computer usage.

FD

Buy a little more computer than what you need. Nitek He and VR3 will cover all your needs, but allow you to expand your horizons in the future. This is probably blasphemy, but I love a computer, and have tables for bail out.

DA, what computer are you using? I have plans to take Adv Nitrox and Deco procedures next year, and have been looking at computers capable of decos without locking out. I really like the NiTek He. It's a bit more than I need, but I like to leave the door open for future training. I think the NiTek duo would work though. Not too worried about cost, just would like to keep it under $1000. I wish I could buy one right now, DiveRite has a NICE sale on them.

FD

Buy the He now. The sale is because DiveRite is phasing it out and replacing it with a new, improved, much more expensive SCR/CCR compatible computer. The Duo works well, but it's a 2 gas, which can keep you in the water longer because you can only program back gas and 1 deco gas. Plus, for only $200 more...

I'm like kartdvr, I use the computer first, and tables as back ups, but that's what's necessary in caves. The depth can vary greatly during the dive so working up straight tables will keep you in the water a lot longer than the computer will. The back up tables will keep you safe but in a lot longer than necessary based on the real profile. I took my Adv nitrox/deco proc from my cave instructor so we worked the table, but we still dove the computers.
