Ha ha - this reminds me of the scene from Captain Ron when they run out of gas in a storm enroute to an island. Ron says "I know we must be close because we only had enough gas to make it...and we just ran out of gas!"
Well...make sure you carry a pony bottle in case this happens

So how much does your shop charge to O2 clean a SPG?
Ask Matt...he said you should O2 clean your spg

Ha ha ha - forget the pony bottle - that falls outide of "The Collective".

Just make sure your DIR buddy is there to bail you out because you can't solve the problem on your own. Don't burden yourself with gear to solve your own problems.

I haven't cleaned my spgs. I know that they haven't had any silicone put on them so I figured they were clean. I haven't blown up yet.
;)

your 50/50 might not be a problem but the 100% might oxidate the O-ring and spindle in a non clean spg

Let me just say, I was kidding about cleaning spgs. I don't know how you could do that outside of the manufacturing process. Some gauges are built for O2 usage but once you have used one with anything but O2 it is not truly O2 clean. However the risk is prettly low considering how gauges work, you are more likely to get adibatic compression from a reg than a gauge so that is how we get away with it. As with anything to do with O2 everything will burn given enough O2 and a high enough temperature. Some things just burn better than others.

Yes cleaning the little spindle and O-rings might be a help though.

Hay Jason I know exactly what you mean. I had a couple of US Divers Micra regs laying around and wanted to use them for my deco regs. I had one hell of a time getting people to except the fact that they would work just fine. People kept telling me that I didn't need a balanced first stage for a deco reg and that I should just buy another cheap unbalanced reg instead. I kept telling them that I already had these two regs and that I never used them and asked why should I spend another $300 to buy two new regs when I already had these two. I finally got them to admit that there was no reason that they wouldn't work it was just over kill as a balanced reg wasn't necessary. Now I have two O2 clean regs for my deco bottles and didn't have to spend more then $50 to get them cleaned.

I always recommend my students to get the BEST possible regs for their deco bottles.. Once you start doing some real dives you end up spending more time on your deco bottles than on your back gas.. The easier the deco reg breathes the better..

I use both plastic and brass guages on my deco bottles,, The plastic work fine for the shallower depths, but I have flooded and seen flooded plastic guages used for the deeper dives (if you need to deco on the gass, you should carry it with you).. The cases deform under pressure and eventually leak..

On expedition I was part of last year EVERY plastic guage flooded, the brass guages were fine....

I've had folks come to the shop and wanted the SPG hose cleaned (as in having Simple Green run thru the inside of the hose.) We dont provide that service.
