Picked this off the internet...

"The bomb, used to scare seals away from fishing nets, is a cylindrical device about 3 3/8 inches long and five-eighths of an inch in diameter that is filled with black powder and carries explosive power equivalent to one-quarter stick of dynamite."

There were 6 of these things going off near you?!

wow... 1/4 stick? what's that equiv. to????? M80?

Yep - 6 during the course of the dive. The boat throws them over the side to scare the sea lions away from the squid attracted by their lights

Near? Well, sound travels very fast and effectively underwater. We were moving south, away from the boat, but the sound traveled so well, it could have been on top of us.

Well, not exactly. An M80 is mostly flash powder, so it's hard to equate one to a 1/4 stick of dynamite (black powder)

Doh! Anyone else experienced anything like this?

Dove the outside of the breakwall about 200 meters (or call it yards) west of the light there. Vis was about 20-25 feet at the start of the dive and no surge to speak of. Toward the end of the dive about 4:00 p.m. you could see the bottom getting stirred up (no not from us, we stayed at about 20 feet along the wall over a 40 foot bottom.) and the vis started to deteriorate. Forecase is for 10 foot surf tomorrow and Sunday, so maybe that system is staring to move in.

Lots of healty kelp and fish. not a lobster to be seen.

Time of dive: 10:45 pm
Depth: 10-65 ft
Vis: 10-30 ft
Temp: 54f
Bottom time: 63 mins

Great vis for the beach, never below 10', 30' was the norm. Interesting debris field, with the ship, rocks, and the fishing crap that has been dumped/lost. Beautiful gorgonians, a few bugs, big swell shark, octopus, squid, ling cod, halibut, nudibranchs, surf pearch, sculpins, turbot, scallops.

A very cool dive!
:D

Time of dive: 1:37 pm
Depth: Average 30ft Max 77ft
Vis: 30+ ft
Temp: 62f
Bottom time: 41mins

Wonderful dive conditions. Although topside was lacking sun. First time diving in Catalina and I loved it.

December 9
Time of dive: 7:30 pm
Depth: 25-45
Vis: 5-7'
Temp: 46!!!!!!!!!!!
Bottom time: 67 minutes

Coldest dive for me ever. We had planned to 2 dives last night, but I was so cold after the first, I was hurting.

We ended up with 4 bugs between 3 guys.

DFG checked us at the dock, both guys came walking up to us wearing sandles/t-shirt, flashed their badges, and searched the boat. One of them quoted, "I know this boat well"

December 12
Time of dive: 6:30 pm
Depth: 25-40
Vis: 10-12'
Temp: 53
Bottom time: 63 minutes
Surges 4-5 foot.

Visability is getting better, and so are the bugs. 7 bugs between 2 divers. Nice dive.

December 13
Time of dive: 5:00pm
Depth: 15-40
Vis: 15 or better
Temp: 55
Bottom time: 60 minutes

Conditions are much better now, that the swell is starting to lay down. The sea lions were out in force this night, and very active under the surface. No bugs to be seen this night. I was almost bored.
We were accused of cutting lobster hoop lines when we pulled the boat out of the harbor. 2 guys approched us with big gaffs in their hands, telling us they saw us cuting their lines. I just happen to have my flair gun handy. They had no proof it was us, and they walked away. Could have been a bad situation.
