Original press release by the police upper Austria.

My abbreviated translation:

2 German citizens (26yo, 28yo), resident in Vienna, certified in the fall of 2013, took their AOWD course in the Attersee (lake Atter).

At a platform in 30 m, one of them (26 yo) panicked which probably led to heavy breathing and icing of his regulator. He refused the octopus offered by his buddy & the instructor. The instructor then tried to grab the panicked diver and perform an emergency ascent, but in 18 m he slid out of his control. Both other divers did not have enough air left to chase him. 2 divers from another group heard about the accident and recovered the body.

Sad!

Yes, that is sad. It seems strange that neither his buddy or instructor had enough air to "chase" him, it would appear they were lower on air than they should have been.

I agree. It's not quite clear from the police report if they were out of air or if the diver in trouble slipped away too quickly.
