Agree with Jag that it is very sad that young children had to die just from need of a meal, and that the turtle was possibly taken because other food was not available.
I've read that reports from Columbus' expeditions to the "New" World (tell that to the "Native Americans") saw turtles filling the oceans as far as the eye could see. Sad that they are no longer so abundant.
