Some of it maybe show but I have read interviews with divers that have attempted records and they have complained of som of the same issues and even gone to local chambers for short rides.

Check out http://www.deeperblue.net/subcat.php/58 for more detail. They've had a guy there all week covering it.
Tonight's stunt is live but he's been in the water for a week. The skin on his body is deteriorating. He's also been fasting since April 25th and this week he's been taking in some kind of supplemented Gatorade.
I'm not at all a DB fan but I'm very interested to see how this turns out. Pretty fascinating stuff.

Maybe I am nuts, but I ain't buying it. Don't forget Blane is a master of illusion. Has anyone ever seen that "Street Magic" show he did a few years ago? The stuff he does is amazing, but it ain't real, and neither is this.... at least I think so..... maybe..... hmmmmm....

Stupid as it is, it's real. He has three of the country's top free divers working as coaches and safety personel.

RoatanMan:
It gets to the extent where he's so stupid that he may feel no pain. Nor may many of the viewers of the tv special.

If he does drown during the breath-hold part maybe it will cause a positive interest in SCUBA diving.

You can only hope.

Is it any crazier than the time he froze himself into a block of ice?

That doesn't make it real, but it does make it SEEM real.

if he's breathing 100% O2 then he's a certifiable moron, but the problem would be pulmonary toxicity. DCS isn't going to happen at that depth, period. even if he's diving 21% the ppN2 he's breathing is going to be less than 1 ata so he's below saturation in all his tissues and bubbles just aren't forming. you need to be at least 9 feet deep in order to have ppN2 exceed 1 ata in any tissue and have any risk of bubble formation.

if he's breathing totally dry air that's probably what is hammering on his lungs. trying to do a 9 minute breathhold after trashing your lungs that way seems phenominally stupid.

Eskimos go inside of blocks of ice to warm up. He was probably warmer inside of that block than the fans standing outside in the weather watching him.

As before, it's show business, I wouldn't burst a brain cell trying to figure it out :)

Damn...mean he can't really levitate?
