I belonged years ago...In the recent past, I have been purchasing travel accent coverage from an outfit in Arizona for both my diving and motorcycles adventures....for $1M coverage, it usually runs about $50.00 for the week or so time frame. I dont see much activity of DAN here on the sight?

Is the Magazine worth it?

A great benefit of DAN is their expertise in diving injuries and accidents. Upon your call, they will arrange everything to get you to a chamber, including international medevac flights. You can call for advice and talk to an MD who's experienced in diving medicine as well. I suspect your travel accident insurance would be mostly useless for this. Another benefit of DAN is their ongoing research that benefits the diving community.

As for the magazine, it's a good read, but it's the insurance you're most concerned with.

The place I have been dealing with will hire a private jet to return you in whole or not....also to fly a family member to you if your hospitalized overseas. I think the expertise of diving and chambers is key, but I believe these are offered to me as well. Either way, $55.00 for a family membership is a year of benefits, not just the time away.

BTW....We have a home on Orange Lake if you ever care to dive it:-)

I don't know know who you are speaking of so I can't comment on them. I do know, from past experience, some insurance sounds great till you need to use it. Dan, from experience, is no questions -- their concern was on the diver and what he needed. No nickel and dime games- just take care of him we will worry about cost later. You get what us pay for....but you seldom get what you don't pay for! Keep that in mind. My vote is Dan insurance.

Dive insurance is the wrong thing to try and economize on. Go DAN.

The magazine became a lot better when Stephen Frink took over as editor a few years ago - at least the photos did. I haven't seen one recently. See some of the articles and flip thru the most recent issue online here: Alert Diver Online

I personally would not want to be just thinking it might be, I would want to know 100% for sure. :)

My foreign language skills are poor, but for motorcycling & diving in places where English is not the primary language, I do not purchase accent insurance -- I'm generally able to make myself understood for basic tasks (getting gas -- for breathing or for the bike, etc).

On a more serious note, I've purchased accident/evac insurance for some motorcycle trips (never had to use it, so I can't comment on the quality). $50/week sounds very, very high. In the past I've paid ~250/yr -- I just did a quick quote from https://www.squaremouth.com (no affiliation), and found policies from $165~800/yr. Obviously, you'd need to check very carefully for their coverage on 'high risk' activities, particularly motorcycling & diving.

Anyway, some of the DAN plans offer medical/evac assistance for non-diving events (though to a lesser degree than for diving-related issues), so you may want to look at the equation in reverse...instead of a general-purpose travel accident policy that might cover diving, get a diving-specific policy that also provides (some) coverage for riding.

Oh, the DAN magazine is a very nice benefit.

DAN has been good and reliable for me. They are quick with email queries and have always been helpful.
