I'm going to join DAN. A while ago, I read recommendations on SB that a certain level of DAN insurance was a lot better coverage for the money than the others. I searched and searched SB to find it again. Think I can find it !! Anyway, does anybody have any thoughts on this ? Thanks for any and all help

i was looking into this 2 years ago and although i did not buy the insurance then (i probably will at some point when I travel more), I remember from SB and DAN website that standard plan (the cheapest) was not optimal. Preferred plan seems to cover non-diving medical issues abroad and trip cancellation. If your regular medical coverage is not great when travelling - then it's smth to consider. For diving - their master plan seems to be ok for an occasional vacation diver. if you plan to travel/dive a lot, then maybe preferred plan. don't go with the standard.

I chose the master plan. For what I do, it seems to be the best choice. However, like the vast majority of us here on SB, I haven't had to actually USE DAN's services, so anything I say is purely theoretical. Certainly, the best advice would come from divers who have had to put their plans into service.

I would assume we are covered by our provincial plans if in Canada. If travelling I guess medical insurance of all kinds is advisable. I have it on my Visa card. Not sure if it covers dive accidents, though it is for "emergencies" within 31 days out of the country. Maybe other Canucks can help with these questions.

The Preferred is what we have........not much more to 'go all the way'.....

Not trying to hijack my own thread, but I just read about Dive Assure on SB. Now, I need to compare Dan and Dive Assure.

I've always been pretty happy with DAN...they've been really great about being available for advice.

I've got the middle plan (can't recall what it's name was). The standard plan only covered accidents that happened above 130 feet, and the coverage amounts were smaller than the other two plans. The most expensive plan had a lot of trip coverage...so it seemed to be a better choice for the traveling diver.

I get the DAN Preferred plan for several reasons.

1. I want the best coverage in case of a problem that can be extremely expensive.

2. It is really cheap insurance at any level--why not spend a few more bucks to get the best?

3. Although I have never used DAN in terms of needing insurance, I have used them many, many times in the past. I have called and asked questions. I have sent emails and gotten informative responses (Just did that today, in fact.) I have searched their site for information. I have learned scads from their articles. In short, I am very glad they are there, and I am willing to pay my share to keep them there. That is the final reason why I pay for the highest level of insurance, whether I will need it or not, and it is also why I include a contribution when I do.
