Does DAN insurance cover any diving (ie. tec, trimix)? Or is it strictly a recreational diver's insurance?

Is there another insurance to cover tech, trimix and rebreathers?

Hi scubabunny:

DAN sells different insurance policies with different coverages. I believe the "Standard" plan has a 130' depth limit. You would need to read the policies and ask DAN to be sure, but I believe both the DAN "Master" and "Preferred" plans include any covered in water accident while doing recreational skin or scuba diving of any kind at any depth. I mention "recreational" because I seriously doubt that they would cover on the job incidents for commercial or military divers, but I suppose they might in some circumstances. DAN insurance is "secondary" coverage and only pays after all your other "primary" heath insurance policies have paid.

Look at DAN's website, call them for info, join DAN if you haven't. It's good insurance for divers from a worthwhile organization.

Hi scubabunny,

You might find my post of 12-27-01, appearing in this thread http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5009&highlight=dan+insurance, to be informative in a general way.

As regards your specific question, all DAN policies cover all gas mixes. The use of the word "recreational" in the policies is to distinguish this from commercial, not technical, diving. BTW, as regards technical diving, be aware that the Standard Plan has a 130' depth limit. The Masters & Preferred Plans have no depth limit.

Hope you found this helpful.

Thanks guys, that helps alot! :)

Hi scubabunny,

You're entirely welcome.

Because of that "Undercurrent" http://www.undercurrent.org/ article, I've learned more about these policies than is consistent with good mental health. To make matters worse, I've got one coming out soon on DAN's new dive gear insurance coverage, and how it stacks up against others. Help.

If you have any additional questions, feel free to e-mail me.

Best regards.
