I have read a few conflicting reports on WHAT and HOW Much coverage DAN will provide when diving in Mexico/Cozumel.

I've read that they have a 3k cap for Dive Professionals in Coz.

I've read that they have a 3k cap in Coz regardless of profession.

I've read that they have a 3k cap when diving anywhere in MX.

Anyone know the facts?

I should add that I've checked the DAN website, and they list nothing about coverage CAP's in Mexico, or Cozumel.... which would lead me to believe that the limits are coverage are in force ANYWHERE one dives, which is exactly what the site says.

Thanks,
Ron

I've heard the same things you did and am totally unclear on what is accurate. Does anyone want to call DAN to verify what the correct info is? I'd call but dont have the number

I just spoke with two people at DAN. One person was in general member services, and the other was within the claims department.

I asked both of them, "Some friends and I were having a conversation, and one of them mentioned that my DAN coverage caps below the listed amounts when diving in Cozumel, Mexico. Is this true?"

Both of them assured me that my plan coverages apply worldwide. Neither of them had heard any rumors of Cozumel, or any other location for that matter, having lower coverage limits.

The $3K cap will not be published on their website and will not apply to you as a recreational diver on vacation.

The cap I referred to previosuly was a memo I read that was sent to a provider due to the high instances of full-time divemasters/instructorshere on the island that get bent. I'm not even sure if they are enforcing the cap for professionals here. Basically they are/were discriminating against the DM's/Instructors here because very few have primary health coverage, so DAN picks up the entire bill for most of the professional cases here. I think the memo was more of a threat to the providers to make sure they weren't over treating people and putting people in the chamber when not needed. I haven't heard anything about it since then, and that was over a year ago.

Whatever your coverage limits are, that's what you'll get...don't worry, this does not apply to tourists here. It also will not apply if you are an instructor or divemaster diving here.

However, if your dive op tries to tell you that $1 a day will cover you in the chamber...laugh at them. All that is is a donation to the chamber, which is fine...But it WILL NOT cover you in the event of an accident.

Get diving insurnace no matter what healthcare plan you have. It's less than $100 per year and will pick up as a secondary if you have primary coverage. If you don't have primary, they act as the primary. It's worth it. Keep in mind that hyperbaric treatment is about $800 per hour...minimum 2 hours 45 minutes. That's just for the chamber ride.

Hope this helps clarify.

I called up DAN before my trip to Cuba and was told that there isn't any.... hmmm.

Probably because DAN's insurance company is based in the US. I don't think it will cover you if you get to dive in North Korea either.

Ooops! Just posted this question in another thread that was discussing it. Anyway... glad to hear it's just a nasty rumor. Had me worried for a few minutes!!!! :)
