Ok, campers, here's the latest.
The new Dallas Children's Aquarium at Fair Park will be re-opening starting the first day of the State Fair (Sept. 24).
Most likely a "soft" opening with not all exhibits being online yet.
However, there will be a need for volunteers throughout the Fair, daily and weekends. This would be a great way to get your foot in the door, we haven't taken on new volunteers since I first started volunteering there something like 8 years ago.
Some of the duties will include:
Touch tank: will likely involve wading in booties inside the tank and interacting with the public over the separate shallow corner with animal encounters. Standing outside the tank and doing encounters might be pretty tough. Animals will be in the main pool, the back of which can be gated off to limit the number of animals that are out in the front part, and can be picked up from the pool to be placed in the interactive area.
Stingray bay: Visitors will be given the opportunity to feed the rays at 10 a.m., noon, and 2, 4, and 6 p.m. Only a set amount of food will be sold for each hour and visitors will have the option of buying a ticket that guarantees them food for one of the later feeding times. We will need someone stationed at the ray tank, likely in the water, for the whole day to monitor the feeding and ensure that no one throws things into the tank or messes with the animals. They will also be responsible for interpretive and answering questions while they are stationed there.
Modules are zones called fresh water, shores, near-shores, off-shores. Each zone has a specific set of ecosystems and the animals that might be found in them. The aquarium will be providing animal and habitat information sheets.
Diving operations will begin sometime after the State Fair, but as I have said before, you usually have to volunteer for 6 months before qualifying to dive anyway.
if you are interested contact Bruce Rasmussen, Volunteer Coordinator brucer@dallaszoo.com for more info and direction.
volunteers will receive a parking pass and entry pass to the Fair the day(s) you work.
This is a lot of fun if you have time to spare, the kids (and adults) that come to the aquarium get soooo much more out of the place with extra educational people on hand and if you can make it fun and they see your excitement for the ocean and our waterways, maybe they will be inspired to help preserve them for the future...as that is what zoos and aquariums are really all about.
The zoo and aquarium go out of their way to show thier appreciation for their volunteer staff, they are constatly giving thanks and throw a big party for us every year with some pretty good raffle prizes.
thanks to all that have contacted me and if you have any questions about what we do as volunteers, please feel free to PM me
