cypress spring

Does cypress do the same as morrison when the river levels go up? Is cypress diveable when the creek is up?

The old owner of the Cypress property dug a trench that diverts rain run-off and collects it into a culvert that comes out downstream from the spring basin. Cypress itself pumps an impressive amount of water out per day (I have heard 80 million,but I am not sure about that) this helps to keep the basin clear even when the water is up.

Earlier this year I went to Cypress while the Choctawhatchee river was still well within flood stage. Holmes creek was up and the run going to Cypress was tannic, but about a hundred yards from the basin there was a distinct line where the clear water started and the water from that point on was gin clear. Cypress is nowhere near as susceptable as Morrison to river levels. It would have to be one heck of a flood to have Cypress blown out.

Cypress usually stays clear except for extreme conditions upstream!!!

Its clear 95% of the time, but believe me, it CAN go under.


It pumps 90 million gallons a day, sometimes. Its occassionally a first magnitude spring, but typically a strong second magnitude.





At the current levels, I'd chance the trip - doesn't lok bad....yet!

Yes, Cypress does flood....here are a few pictures from a dive two years ago. I am not sure how much rain Ida dropped on Holmes Creek...but I agree with Bugman, I think you will be okay.

Well that gives me an idea what to expect....good or bad.
I spoke to the people at vortex and today at about 2:00 the vis. was about 30ft. The guy said they got 5-6 inches of rain......I don't know if that is correct though.
I'm sure morrison is flooded but I will probly stop by just to see.

I looked at the projected water levels for the Chactawhatchee river and things are gonna get nasty for a while for Morrison Springs. The water is supposed to crest at 13 feet by Saturday.

I was with three people who had never dove there before. At that time, I had only been there one other time. With the brown water, it took me a while before I could find the cavern. As you would expect, the cavern was clear. Here is the classic cavern shot....looked a little different that day.
