How did it hit the compressor and not the higher building?

Probably found a path through the building to get to a good ground on the compressor, then the main strike followed. I've been in a building when it was hit, and later found the path it used by following the damage from where I saw it come through the ceiling.

Lightning is a funny thing. Had a client swear (years after the install) that we installed his gas system wrong. He had a huge leak out of nowhere. After looking at things and the giant burnt hole in the side if his gas line I asked if he had been struck by lightning. He said no so I took a walk outside. Sure enough there was a tree about 20' from his house. The back side was completely torched.

Then he said, "come to think of it we did lose some appliances last week"🙄. Lucky his house didn't burn to the ground.

The code has since changed to bond all gas systems to try and avoid this.
