Well, I'd say, that settles that.

One of the advantages of using a steak knife is, if you drop it, because is has so little value, you won't add risk to go after it.

I have been making my own, and then I bought a Diverite knife and the sheath was junk. It was too soft (making it difficult to put the knife back into) and the stitching came out in a week.

So I finally bought a sewing awl. Funny, that's one of those things you rarely need, but when you have one you use it all the time.

I did what was suggested once and went around the house and garage with my steak knife and shears cutting this and that to see how both did. Yes, you can cut a penny with medical shears. Thin steel cable, rope, fishing line, netting...all cut easily with the steak knife.

Good so far with about 20 dives in salt water. You need to get the H20 models list on the right side which are corrosion resistant. It definatly blows away the Z knife. I discovered it on a tech forum...

I have had my broken off steak knife for over six years, it still looks like the day I cut the top off. I carry another knife I bought at Salvo on my other rig, also solid. The shears in my pocket are generic EMT shears (bought online at a generic medical supplier). After three years, still look fine.

EMT shears do OK but the rivet will eventually rust with no warning when trying to cut something. It rusts out and you cannot tell it is going as it is hard to inspect. I have had it happen a few times. I have seen a rivet replaced with a SS nylock nut and bolt but it makes it bulky.

I have the broken steak knives and shears and line cutters but they aren't worth a hoot if you get into an underwater fight with henchmen or evildoers. You need a real knife for that.

Sometimes I wonder what kind of cutting tool Christina Watson had when she was diving the Great Barrier Reef when her husband David Gabriel Watson cut off her air and drowned her...

I bet it wasn't the mighty Sea Hawk, the Vulcan or the Mark 3 Mod 0 hose slashers.
