You mentioned items used by treasure hunters and it made me think of a potential need they may have, and a (small) need in the public safety diving community.

We often use Side Scan SONAR systems <www.MarineSonic.com> and have a need for an underwater datum that reflects a SONAR signal well and has a shape that is unusual enough to stand out from "normal" bottom features. Right now I use a collapsible steel dog kennel. One problem is that the mesh of the steel is not spaced close enough to give a strong SONAR return and there are not enough sharp angles to reflect the signal well. Add to that the fact that it is steel and begins to rust after a period of time. Some folks use wire mesh boxes (like crab traps) but those don't collapse well.

I am not certain how many units you would sell but I think I have some clients that would be interested if the price was reasonable.

Something else that seems over-priced are good quality strobe arms and trays for UW cameras or video. Check out the stuff from Ultralight Control Systems:

If you are looking into the DIY dive lights, also check into the DIY camcorder housings.

Also, look at the twin tank and pony brackets made by Ultimate Products Corp:

Their products are machined aluminum and produced on a small scale-- excellent quality, but high prices. Perhaps you could directly compete with them.

I agree that there is a good demand for can light parts out of alum or Delrin....Also I just posted a concept design for a backplate. If you have a waterjet or laser cutter you could crank them out in a half hour (thats with a coffee break) If you can machine Delrin, I'll PM you for a quote.

Go for the can light and I am in. I would even be satisfied with a 10W'er. I've been looking but $400..Ouch!!
