With the water temperature dropping a little are the lobster heading to deeper water? I have been pretty successful in the 30-35 foot range in the past few weeks but recently I have come up empty. This might be because of the season and the amount that has been already caught but this is my first season and I would like to here from the guys or girls who have been soon bit for a few years. I look forward to your insights.

Out here the commercial lobster fishers are finding few bugs in their traps due to the abundance of dead and dying squid as a food source. I wouldn't be surprised to find the bugs get their meal early on and retreat back to their holes. Out here hoop netters have also taken a lot of them. I've seen the population in the dive park (a marine protected area) seem to drop precipitously since season began, probably due to all the hoop nets along the boundary line.

Many of our experienced bug hunters out here are diving to 150-180 fsw to get their bugs. Ofc ourse I don't recommend diving beyond one's training and/or experience.

Dr Bill,
Thanks for the post, 150 is a little deep for me, getting out to 35-40 is hard enough given the area that I am diving. With the kelp staying in the 500-800 meter out, I need to invest in a zodiac or dive kayak to get to deeper sites or drive to different locations. I shore dive from Dana point to Encinitas for lobster and the gradient from the beach does not allow for the drop offs that you have on the island. I will continue to look for new sites along the shore until I can procure a kayak or zodiac.
