I'm sure some spin doctors are sincere in their own minds and fully believe in what they do. They can easily cover and disguise the truth though, in their efforts to get the message across. Important to know if one is considering literally believing in something written down so long ago - or even sometimes last week.......

Kim:
I wonder if it would have been any different if Apollonius of Tyana had got the publicity instead of Jesus?
Very different: many more vegetarians, no cult of death, no worship of the instrument of torture and execution (if Jesus had put to death in New York in the 1950s would Christians wear little gold electric chairs on a chain around their necks?), even the possibility that the Spanish might not have conquered Meso-America (the locals were fascinated by portrait of Jesus showing the bleeding heart).

Try and have some sympathy and show some of that famous Christian charity.
Yesss, yes, I am... it cuts both ways you know - keeping the conversation above questioning one's "worthiness" is my objective here.
...you know that it doesn't cut both ways. Only those who claim love as their core principle are required to love their enemies. <- zero sarcasm

It is a sad fact that many who claim to be Christians do not exemplify the actual teachings of Jesus in that regard. So far as I have read in this thread those who have claimed to be Christians have been respectful of others and kind in their approach. (adza has been exemplary in that regard.)
No hypocrisy there.

Likewise, it seems that those who believe in *no-god* are at least being consistent with the demands of their faith when they mock those who believe/adhere to faith in God... but so what. Christ was mocked on the cross and His prayer was, 'Father forgive them, they don't know what they are doing.'
So no hypocrisy there either.

For those who think this is a double standard... it is... and by design!

It seems as though everyone is accurately representing the fruit of their position. The heart is revealed by what comes out of the mouth.

So, in this thread there appears to be some mocking going on... making fun of religious belief and even counting people worthless because of their belief. That is as I would expect... but let it never be the case that those who say they believe in Jesus denigrate others who do not.
(If I have slipped in that regard I apologize.)

Yes they are evil. Bring on the next Spanish Inquisition. That should put them in their place.

Actually the Spanish are quite laid back these days. (sorry......this isn't supposed to be mocking....they really are....most of Europe is except that little City in Rome.)

Thats nice. Not even close to the point I was making, but its nice to know the Spanish are nice and laid back.

If I gave it a "more" correct name, Christian Fundamentalist Inquisition, would you know what I was talking about?

hehehehe ... you are so right: all Christians who have posted have been respectful and kind, all non-Christians who have posted have been mocking

i can't tell if you're over-generalzing or thinking wishfully

this ... doesn't sound ... a wee... bit ....

oh, what's the word ....

biased?

:rofl3:

(Pug trick No. 4: always make it personal. if you can attack the messenger, don't bother trying to attack the content of their message. get them on the defensive at a personal level.)

Goes hand in hand with "our faith is right" and your science is wrong.

JeffG:

That is an oxymoron. The fundamental principle of Christianity is love. What ever it calls itself, if it is not characterized by love, then it isn't Christianity. The previous inquisitions were not Christian... they were all about those in power maintaining power.

At any rate, what is called the Christian Fundamentalist movement seems to be losing its bid to ascend to power so I don't think you have to worry about any inquisitions coming from that quarter.

Uncle Pug:
The previous inquisitions were not Christian...

oh, really?

talk about a nice way to distance yourself from your faith's past errors. that's like saying that since the Japanese Internment Camps of World War II were not in the spirit of America they were not carried out by Americans.

[back on topic]

so, were the Inquisitors Mormons? Muslims? perhaps they were Buddhist monks disguised as Catholic priests?
