Following the money is easy - most scientific research is publically funded, so FOA requests (or whatever those are called in your country) can usually furnish all the info you need. And for that matter, nearly every scientific journal in the world requires that your acknowledge the agency(s) and companie(s) which provided the funding for your study. So, as a reader, you know who paid for it, if not the exact amount.
And depending on the agency, you may even be able to get more information - many agencies list grantholders and the amounts of funds they recieve.
