Hi everyone, just thought I would add my little trip report to this section.
Carrie and I arrived in Cozumel on May 10th. We were scheduled to stay there until May 18th, but after 3 days, plans abruptly changed. =-)
A little background info: I accepted a new position with a company the day before we left for our vacation....I was going to go on vacation and then come back and then give my two week notice...well after 3 days of being in Cozumel I asked Carrie if she wouldn't mind staying another week.....after some thought and a couple phone calls she agreed. Well, this is how it went...
Talked to Las Brisas, our hotel, and confirmed they had room for us for another week...sure they did!
Called up US Air and told them we wanted to leave later...we were told that the soonest we could leave was the 25th..a full week after our original scheduled departure.
Carrie had a couple things to clear up before we did this..she did that and then BAM.
Told Las Brisas were staying another week, called up US Air and told them to change our flight to the 25th, and then my favorite part of it all.........
Called up my boss to tell him I quit...man what a nice feeling that was. After that, went down to the local internet cafe and emailed my new HR person at the new job and told them I could start June 2nd. They thought that was great!
Ok, and now to the diving. After visiting Bonaire twice and not knowing anything better, it was quite obvious why Cozumel is the top diving destination in the world. Simply awesome..the topography and water clarity simply outperforms Bonaire on all levels. The drift diving was a pain in the arse when trying to take some video shots, but I worked on it and became a little better.
The marine life there was far more abundant and variant. I saw some many darn sea turtles I quit videotaping them...I also saw a nurse shark and a black tip shark...as well as a whole bunch of different reef fish.
I only did 22 dives in the time I was there...Carrie was a sport about the whole thing, but I really think she thinks I'm nuts. I could of easily did 40+ dives, but being the nice boyfriend I am, I spent time with her..hehehe.
As mentioned above I stayed at Las Brisas, which is formally Costa Club. I dove with Dive Paradise. I highly recommend both operations. In fact, seeing that I have the rest of this week off, I will find the time to write a letter to both of them, thanking them for their professional service and courtesy.
I never thought I would find better diving than Bonaire.....I still think it is a good place to go for beginers because of the lack of current and difficult topography, but it just does not compare to Bonaire. Now some people will argue that it is different types of diving and they are right, but forget about how you get to the reefs...when you start to compare the in water experience...Cozumel is the overall winner.
Being a videographer, I found it much easier in Bonaire because of the lack of current, but after just reviewing my video from Cozumel...the water clarity and life make up for this. One technique I used was to hold the camera out in front of me and below me, with my body above...I would let the current just take me over the reef and some of the shots I got doing this are just great.
Thanks for reading,
Jason
