This is our first trip to Cozumel. Wanted to find out if we should make reservations with a Dive Master now or can we make dive arrangements after we get down there? any help would be appreciated.

Someone with a lot more familiarity with the area will probably post a better reply later :).

But for my 2 cents, since I am also going diving in Cozumel in August, I would suggest researching the numerous dive ops before you go and pick what you want. The prices and boats/equipment offered vary some. Also not all will pick up from all hotels so factor that into your decision.

I did a lot of looking before picking one. There are many many operators and everyone seems to have their favorite. I don't think I saw anything really bad about any of them, so it seems like personal choice on that one.

I would contact them and get your dive plans locked in so you don't find them booked up and have to go with your second choice after you get there.

Depending on where you are staying, if you just plan to go with the resorts dive op you would probably be safe to just walk up.

It is also going to depend on the size of your group. If it's just you, or you and a buddy you can probably book last minute. A lot of the better dive operators advertise the fact their boat groups only consist of 6-8 divers. So if there is more than a pair of you it might be more difficult to book last minute on a preferred smaller group. If you've ever dove small group vs a big "cattle boat", the smaller group is better.

Maybe I am just too much of a planner, but we booked in April or May for August and sent the deposit to the dive master the same week.

We have been to Coz twice and both times dove with Scubatony. He is a small group dove op. There is no cattle boat and and he will show you the best that Coz has to offer ....

Ho Doowain

Do you know which hotel you will be staying at yet? Many have dive operations on site and you can probably make an advance reservation no problem (worth checking their prices/reputation first though).

Otherwise you can book independently and I agree Scuba Tony is great. You can also find some more information about diving in general here: Cozumel Mexico Travel - Cozumel Dive

If you're going to be here in the winter high season then I'd say it's definitely worth lining up something in advance as the best operations/masters/instructors can get booked out. You'll always find something when you arrive still, but it may not be the best option...

Wrong thread. Removed other reply.

EDIT: Best to make reservations before you get down here in my opinion. There are tons of dive ops to choose from and everyone tends to have their own favorite. Depends what you like, small boats, large boats, every morning, etc. In my opinion due to all the competition on the island, there is not a bad dive op to choose. I'll let some one else chime in with other suggestions. You can certainly just show up and wing it and pick one of the hundreds of dive ops but you may not get exactly what you're looking for.

I usually dive with Aqua Safari as they're conveniently located downtown, have big boats, great divemasters and a very consistent schedule. I also like Aldora since they have Steel 100s.

i have been diving in coz 4 times in last 4 years, i do not think there would be any problem just walking up. at the wyndham i dove with sand dollar sports on 2 trips,at the allegro with dive palancar 1trip, at hotel cozumel with dive paradise 1 trip in 2009,all 2 are top notch operations, hotel cozumel is close in to town which is a much longer boat ride to main reefs, the wyndham and allegro are only minutes from some of main reefs, if you stay at occidental grand it is sister resort to the allegro, so they also use dive palancar.. have fun i will be on mainland at playa del carmin next week!!!
