Mossman,
Is the Palace that bad?

You said "...The Palace has far better accommodations, food, drinks, and service. That said, I personally wouldn't want to honeymoon there. The time share push, too many kids, and loud entertainment make it a less than romantic locale IMO..."

Like I said before, that is exactly the reason I suggested the Playa Azul. None of that hype stuff, lots of tranquility and they have ocean facing Jacuzzi Suites plus a real beach as good as the Presidente with less of the problems. Short ride into town if you wish. Again, I have no interest in the Playa Azul, just lots of experience in Cozumel.

For an AI? No, I love the Palace. I have plenty of experience ignoring the time-share pushers and kids will be kids. The entertainment is fine if I'm drunk enough and it cuts out by 10 or so if I want to sleep early. It's great for divers. It's great for non-divers. I just questioned whether it's great for honeymooners too. IMO, the Palace is a bit too energetic and social, whereas I believe honeymooners are best served by romantic dinners for two (nothing very romantic about the Palace restaurants, except maybe the Italian one when they have live music), strolls down the beach (no beach at the Palace), and then spending nights in bed instead of watching fire dances and doing chicken dances. But it totally depends on the particular honeymooners.

Make sure to stop by the Blue Angel one night when the guitar player is there. He is awesome, and the location and music makes for a VERY romantic setting!!!

We stayed at Playa Azul on our first trip to Cozumel and liked it a lot; quiet, relaxing, nice beach, great service, low-key. Just found the location inconvenient for diving as pier pickups are pretty much non-existent. To access most of the ops on the island, you would need to rent a car or take a taxi to town or further yet to caleta. It is so far north that unless an op is diving one of the northern sites (and before any will take you there, most will want to see you diving somewhere more benign) it is economically unfeasible for them to travel north to get you and then head to the other end of the island where the bulk of diving is done and pick up the rest of their clients.

Worst case is the taxi ride into town for loading at the Aldora Pier which many of the dive shops use. Last I checked it was $6 and if you are using a dive shop that takes care of your gear, you won't have to drag all that back and forth. But some dive shops do pick up at at a few locations in the North Hotel zone.

Dave, besides Aldora and Blue XTSea, who uses the Aldora pier for pickups?

I have been picked up by Living Underwater at Aldora pier in town.

Dave, when you talk about the $6 cost, are you talking about the taxi fee to and from the north to town (basically adding $12 per day to diving costs)? That would sound about right as it is somewhat under $10 if I take a taxi from town to caleta.

I am not sure of how many do pick up at the downtown Aldora Pier, but add to those mentioned Deep Blue and and I think Liquid Blue.
