no very good business practice on their part
Au contraire!

A very good business practice on their part...for them, not for their customers.

At some hotels, the environmental recovery fee has been included in the nightly rate at booking, at others it was charged separately on departure.

I just booked to come back to Cozumel (here now) in April and staying at Suites Colonial (sister hotel to Casa Mexicana) and received this notice with my reservation:

[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]Important Information
[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]To preserve the beauty of the area, the Municipal Government charges all guests of resorts and hotels an environmental sanitation fee of $ 32.57MXN per room, per night. This tax is payable directly at the hotel.
As of April 1st, the lodging tax increases from 3% to 5% and upon arrival it will be necessary to collect the difference.

Just returned from Cozumel. Stayed at Fiesta Americana All Inclusive that's booked thru Expedia. We paid an Environmental fee of around US$35, (definitely less than US$40) at check in. It was a one-time charge for the entire week of stay.

my point was more from a business / accounting stand point. hard for a business to account for all the extra fees and taxes if they dont keep proper records.

showing a total for all taxes and fees is fine from a customers standpoint.

Their accounting records may show it broken out in their computer but the receipt you get is clumped together. It is easy to have two (or more) outputs in a database.

We paid $2.00 US per person per day in Feb and I'm sure we've paid a similar fee for the last 2 or 3 visits.
