I did the same thing! Got in good and close, composed a great shot and was congratulating myself on how easy it was.....until I realized the little bugger hadn't moved!

I don't there's any standards, they molt their shalls as they ourgrow them. The Blue Crabs we have here in a brackish river will molt once a month.
