My husband and I are going to Grand Cayman in early August w/a friend and we'll be diving w/DiveTech. We have a condo w/a kitchen at the Plantation Village Beach Resort, 323 West Bay Road. Does anyone know where we could buy groceries around there? Or is that a bad idea?

Gracias!

Will you have a car? I can't remember if there is a Hurley's market still on the West End. Even if not, the grocery stores are not that far away, so if you will have access to transportation you should have no problem. It is an excellent idea to cook in if you have a fully equiped condo. I recently spent two weeks on the East end and did not eat out at all. I'd rather spend the money on diving, and two weeks worth got a little expensive. I lived on the staples; spagetti, salads, bacon and eggs, PB&Js. I would get a pound of Boars Head ham, turkey, some sliced cheese and hoagie rolls which made up my lunches. Cooked up a pot of beans and some rice which would last a couple of days for me. Most condos have grills for your burgers, chicken or fish.

I packed one of those hot/cold cooler things that you can buy at Sam's Club. It folds up flat and was easy to pack. It helps to have some insulation for those items that need to get transported from the store to the fridge.

Yes definitely cook in.

Thank you! Yes, we will be renting a car. Have you ever rented from Andy's?

There's a Sam's Club on the West Side? Do you know the location? How about a Walmart, or Costco?

There's a Fosters in West Bay, don't recall how close that is to where you're staying. If you have a car there's lots of choices, actually there's lots of markets for a small island and you'll find them well stocked. There's a big supermarket near the airport if you want to stop on your way.

Be warned the supermarkets are not open on Sundays, unless it's changed recently. Only some of the smaller convenience type places.

Thank you, Damselfish, for the Sunday heads-up! We will be arriving late on a Saturday, so it is good to know we should shop that night!

Fosters and Hurleys are the "big" supermarkets on island.Pretty much anything you can get at home they have. There is no Sam's club or costco's or walmarts on island. They do have a store called "Price Masters" right by the airport which seems to carry a lot of "Members mark" products which are the same as Walmart and Sams carry here. There is also a similiar store off 7 mile beach called "Cost You Less" it is similiar to "Price Masters" . Things will be a bit more expensive on island but you will save a lot by cooking at your condo.

Fosters is open M-SAT till 11PM. They're part of the IGA chain. There's one by the airport and another one in West Bay. Foster's Food Fair - Store Locator

We rented twice from Andy's, good cars, clean and better prices than the the chains.

Groceries include:
Fosters IGA has multiple locations - Airport, Strand, Republix are all on the west side. Country Side Village in Savannah is a large one heading toward the Eastern Districts. Morritt's Plaza is a small supermarket all the way on East End but selection is more limited. The Strand location is closest to Plantation Village.

Kirk Supermarket has one location and it's on the west side. It's about 3 long blocks (a mile or so?) from Plantation Village.

Hurley's has only one location and it's in Red Bay which is on the way to the Eastern Districts.

Cost U Less (Governor's Square) and Priced Right (next to Fosters at Airport) are warehouse style stores. Cost U Less has a greater selection of food items. Both are on the west side.

Groceries (and the warehouse stores) are closed by law on Sundays. Only gas stations with very limited selection are open.

All the groceries sell cheap styrofoam coolers. It's really not needed for the short trip from Plantation Village to one of the west side supermarkets.

There are no Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, or Costco stores in Cayman.
