How hard is it to convert a Yoke adapter to DIN? Is this something I could do myself (I am a novice in reg repair) if I had the conversion kit, or is it something I should take to a dive shop?

Are yo handy with tools ?
Do you have the tools to do the job ?
If Yes and Yes, then its easy to do.
The yoke nut would need to be un-screwed from the body of the first stage, and the din kit installed.
The toughest part of the whole process is getting the nut off of the first stage if you don't have the socket that fits inside of the yoke. I have used a vise to remove the nut on some of my regs before I purchased the 1" socket.

I have done this to several regulators, and you will find it much easier with the correct tools as Jim has already said. Check this link Scuba Tools - Scuba Tools Custom and you will want the 1" socket, the extension and the holding tool. You can pick these up for about the cost of letting the repair tech do the work, but once you purchase them you will have them for future use.

I just changed my Cressi over to DIN using an adjustable wrench to remove the yoke nut. The nut is a hair wider than the yoke. Piece of cake. Took about two minutes.

Just make sure you have the correct DIN adapter or kit for your reg. In Aqualung regs, for example, many of the DIN adapters look alike, but won't fit all models. Some have o-ring grooves in different spots and whatnot. I would say if you are sure you have the right DIN adapter, then yes, it takes about 5 minutes tops. Also, if you are using the reg for nitrox, make sure you use viton o-rings if they don't already come in the kit.

The other question is where are you getting the adapter? In my case (Apeks) I could have bought it on line for ~ $35+ shipping, waited for it to arrive and changed it myself (pretty mechanically inclined but never worked on regs before, also have lots of tools) or just went by my LDS where they had them in stock for $50 and they changed out for free while I waited.

Guess which one I did :)
