I didn't want the folks in SoCal to think I've dropped the plan to get permission from CDF&G to remove the invasive Asian seaweed Sargassum horneri from Catalina's Casino Pt. Dive Park. However, it has been put on hold until next season for the following two reasons:

1. The cool waters during the summer of 2010 resulting in far less mature S. horneri in the dive park, thus making mechanical control more difficult (immature plants being harder to remove). I have been away since mid-Oct and am not aware of the current status of this species, but think based on late summer water temperatures it may be similar to the previous year. Please feel free to post with your observations since I will not be diving the park for at least another month.

2. My mother had major cancer surgery several months ago so I have been in Florida to take care of her for the past few months and my focus this winter and spring will obviously be on her health and her needs.

Well said fnfalman. Dr. Bill I hope your mother has a full recovery.

ditto on what what said above...family is more important. Sargassum clean out day is a great idea. Bill, diving on kelp project at Shaw's Cove, we ran across some Sargassum muticum...not much, about the same as last winter.

I too would like Bill back but only after he feels his Mom is doing well.

As for the sargassum, once a proven method of removal is figured out, I'll be ready to help. I hate to see a bunch of well intention divers yank it out only to find out that they just spread it out over a larger area.

Gee Dave I was hoping to use my new Nitrox powered underwater Binford weedwacker to clear out that Sargassum.
Anyway, perhaps DrBill could let us know when or how to remove this Sargassum without spreading seeds, (spores), all over the place causing a bigger mess.
Time for a dive at the park.

Any removal at Casino Point would certainly release spores... but the S. horneri has already spread along the entire leeward coast of Catalina and has even been found down on Guadalupe Island off Baja. I don't feel spore dispersal is an issue any more.
