There are beautiful walls...lots of pretty easy drift diving along and on top of reef walls and usually great great viz. I would say the drift diving and size and proliferation of marine life ( larger ) pretty much main difference and it's less costly. ( Little Cayman walls may be better but Cozumel is great too.) Excellent night diving. As said eagle rays in April.
I liked staying in town...there is a surprisingly terrific selection of restaurants and bars. Some of the best food, Mexican and you name it, anywhere.
I stayed at Las Anclas..liked it...dove with Aldora..usually 4-6 other divers....loved it...bigger tanks and long, long bottom times...nitrox is a benefit.
People at Las Anclas had great stuff to say re dive op next door- Tres Pelicanos. They get kudos on SB pretty consistently as does Aldoras and others on top ten list.
Worthwhile to rent a car 1 day and circle island...see Punta Sur...snorkel..eat.
I also did side trips to neaby mainland Mayan ruins at Coba, Chitzen Itza and Tulum. Snorkeled cenotes (diving them next). I thought these were all amazing.
My 2 cents from 3 trips.
