I have an Oceanic VEO 250 computer mounted back to back with my Oceanic compass. I have been experiencing inconsistencies with readings depending on which way my console is oriented. When I first bought the unit last year, my dive shop recognized the problem and replaced the compass for me, but it is still happening. The shop tech called Oceanic yesterday and they suggested replacing the battery saying there might be too much iron in the current one, or it might have gotten "magnetized". We replaced the battery but the issue is still there. We tested the compass by removing it from the console and it worked fine. Anyone ever run up against this issue, or have suggestions for resolving it? Mahalo from Maui.

Someone else had the same problem last year: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/oceanic/333191-veo250-batteries-affecting-compass.html Not sure if they ever solved it. At the time I had a Veo 250 in a console (likely the exact console you have) and for fun, I did test it out and I could see the comp. affecting the compass under the right circumstances but only slightly. Don't of course know how much your's is being affected.

I indirectly solved the problem by moving both the PC (replaced it with a Geo 2.0) and the compass to my wrist. Probably not the solution your looking for but moving the compass to your wrist or a retractor would take care of it.

I agree with taking the compass off the console. Years ago I had a mounted Suunto. I took it off and inserted it in a DSS wrist mount and have never regretted it.

Thanks for the suggestion. Given that Oceanic has not thought this one out, removing the compass may be the best solution!

I'm sort of confused about what you mean about how you orient your compass.

In order for the compass to work, it needs to be level and horizontal. Other than that, can cause the needle to get stuck.

Metal is going to affect your compass. I've seen a SCUBA tank move the needle as much as 30 degrees.

As pointed out, the battery from your computer could be creating enough of a field that it is affecting your compass.

Check out DSS, they make nice boots for a variety of things!

If I hold my console flat, what I am referring to as orientation is which direction it is facing, ie, N,S,E,W OR 12 o'clock, 1 0'clock...

I recognize and understand that a compass must be held level. Thank you for requesting clarification

Placing any battery near a compass will cause compass to give a inaccurate reading that is just a fact. Now how important is it to have your compass pointing to magnetic north? If you are traveling long distances say on a boat beyond the horizon then it is most important, but if you are taking a heading from the boat and just want a reciprocal back to the boat who cares! The 180 degree return will be as off as the out bound course so you will still end up back at the boat.

If you are taking a class with other divers or a member of a search and rescue crew and need to all have the same heading then a wrist or retractor mount compass would solve the problem.

Just another reason why consoles suck. Switch to wrist mount and you'll be a happy diver. One less dangly thing, too.
