I don't know if the way i did NAUI MD went beyond protocol but Rescue was a requirement. We did Rescue and Master back to back both in terms of class instruction and in-water skills and if you didn't pass Rescue you got an AOW cert instead of a Master.

IMHO, the academic part of a NAUI MD alone is well worth the effort.

Would I buy a PADI Master Diver card if I had the specialities to get it? No indeed. (I got one of those bamboo back scratchers on a trip to Central America. It was only a couple bucks.)

Did I take the NAUI Master Scuba Diver course? Absolutely. Not only did it (as given to me, at least) thoroughly cover quite a few of the specialty areas, but it also covered aspects of diving for which I've never seen a PADI specialty, although I admit, I may have missed a few dozen cards, plus the booster packs. (Basically, the theory and physics of diving was covered thoroughly in our course, including guest lecturers.)

Thalassamania:
Try the NOAA Manual (4th Ed.), or U.S. Navy Manual (free on the web) instead, both have much more inofrmation than the "Encylopedia of Diving."

I'm reading the relevant sections currently. It is amazingly educational, especially the chapters on Diving Physics and Diving Physiology. Very good stuff.

So glad to see other agencies adopting frequent buyer plans. That kind of recognition is so good for the diving industry. Can NAUI, YMCA and LA County be far behind?
I thought you needed 50 logged dives? But things do change and rarely for the better. Do you still need to have both the knowledge and skill level expected of a NAUI Instructor, sans the training stuff to be certified as a NAUI Master Diver?

You thought wrong, you DO NOT need 50 dives to become a NAUI Master Scuba Diver.

When I was young and working at Moss Landing Marine Lab they used to call me Nemo, not because I'd been 20,000 leagues under the sea, but because my gear (esp wetsuit) looked like they'd traveled 20,000 leagues under the sea, on foot.

Sorry to derail, but where do I download the navy book at? I googled and got scubatoys but the link didn't work

I rarely thing wrong, once in a while, but rarely and it appears that this was not one of those times, and that's especially good since I designed the class and wrote the standards (at NAUI's request).
