Connecting HD Camcorder to TV directly...

After doing a week of filming I finally connected my Canon Vixia HG20 to my Samsung Tv via component...its Bluray capable and 1080p. But the image quality is dissapointing. The image looks great full size on my computer but doesn't hold the same quality on my 42" HDTV. Is this just the weakness of the camcorder or does it have something to do with formating and post editing? Is it because I am connected through component cables? Thanks.

Before you knock anything out, check the cable between tv and device. You need to have the right connection there or else everything looks terrible!

I am using the PS3, connected via HDMI. I simply copy the HD-File on a harddisk as transport stream and that's it. The PS3 plays it with amazing quality on a 52 inch screen or the 3,20 m full HD projection.

Not to jack the thread but I have a question. What program do you use to stream it to the PS3? I spent 3 hours last night trying various programs that are supposed to stream movies, music, and pictures from my mac to my PS3. None of them worked for all three media types. Some didn't work at all. All of them claimed to work with almost every file out there; unfortunately, they didn't work for me. I am trying to figure out how to get the HD video to my TV without having to hook the camera up to the TV itself. Thanks for the help.

I don't stream. I have a small pocket size external harddisk which runs without additional power supply. This harddisk needs to be formated in FAT32 (max. 4,5 GB files). There I make a folder "video". It's the same with pictures or music. Just copy your files into this video folder and connect the harddisk. mpeg or m2t (transport stream). The same is possible with USB sticks. If you want bigger files burn it on a double layer DVD. The PS3 will read it although it is bigger than 4,5 GB.

Thanks for the info. I have come to a realization that streaming is probably not possible yet unless a better program becomes available. I have also read that streaming HD will probably exceed a wireless router's capabilities so the video would not be without frequent stops and starts.

What format is the HD video when it is uploaded to a computer? My videos are .mov files when on my computer. I believe this is an unsupported format for the PS3 so I would have to convert it, which increases the chance of quality loss. I don't want to lose the HD quality in the viewing process but I also don't want to have to keep my camera connected to play the videos. I am curious as to what the HD video cameras create for files on the computer. Do you have to convert them at all? I think the PS3 is limited in the video formats it will play.

I have the same camcorder and it looks AWESOME on my hdtv - using component inputs. HDMI is an OPTIONAL cable. Use it if you can - it includes audio - which requires the analog cable input. BTW - component input is NOT analog - composite is.
