There are training depths for O/W when you conduct the dives but after that the depths are recommendations. People doing the Advanced course get a controlled deep dive to 30m (if that depth is available) with an experienced person you get to see the effects of that depth on your physiology.

I know O/W card holder with hundreds of dives but people doing their Deep speciality at 10 dives go down to 40m. If I am doing something knew, I typically do it someone more experienced than I am, but that is just me.

I liked the "baby steps" comment above, do it in stages. Narcosis typically starts to affect people below the 25m mark even though they don't 'feel' it.
