JustinW:
with the swells coming from the NW and at the height that they are, you are likely to find that the breakwater is blown out, and even if it isn't, visibility will be down to nothing. Conditions will be marginal at best.
Take another look at the buoy report and the swell models. The wind is SSE right now, which is ideal. I know a certain CD who is going to BW early tomorrow to certify his daughters, and I'm taking a student down for OW/4. I really think it's going to be doable. I don't know about the vis, though. I wouldn't drive down to Monastery, but I predict BW will be OK.

Was in front of the aquarium Thursday with an OW class and we had 35' at 30'! I would guess viz will hold up this weekend except near shore on Saturday. Sunday is your better bet for shore or boat diving. But I've been so wrong before....

KelpCoasters:
I'd like to do a few dives in Carmel/Monterey this weekend. Anybody heard anything about the viz or swells? Looking to probably do Monastery and Breakwater. Will the earthquake affect the conditions, or should Monastery stay relatively clear??? Any thoughts helpful...

Thanks,
OJ

would be curious to see how the classes did in the washing machine this past weekend at the BW, Zf2nt took a student down there. I guess it might be ok if you only have one student at a time, but I certainly wouldn't want to be the student that had their first OW experience in nasty conditions with crappy vis. I've seen it turn more than a few divers away from diving ever again after experiencing a cold, rough day with a less than smooth entry. The NW swells hit the BW pretty good. I bet it was breaking over the wall this past weekend.

drove past there sunday, was very very calm, so if saturday was the same classes were fine..i don't know what the viz was like though

Timing is everything. Dove at Lobos on Tuesday (6/21). Swell was 1-2', driving by Monastery it looked like ankle-biters at most.

Like Chuck says on his site, when the wave forecast shows a blue ocean take the day off and go diving.

Vis in bluefin was 20' and 48f at 60ft.
