I am planning on hitting Monterey Thursday and Friday. Wondering if anyone has been out yet this week? I will try Lobos on Thursday. The webcams look good and the swell forecast also looks good. Now all I need is a vis meter installed.

I heard one group today claim 70' vis at Bluefish Cove! In general, people have been exclaiming over great vis all over the area for the past few days, so I think conditions have improved greatly of late. I'll find out tomorrow (Wednesday)...I'm headed to either Lobos or Monastery in the early afternoon.

I'm an out-of-towner (Puget Sound) that got in at Point Lobos yesterday. Holy cow!

Once we swam out through the kelp, when we descended and headed to Cannery Point Wall, the vis was incredible. Hard to estimate...but easily 30-50 feet once we got out of the main cove area.

Wow.

Oh Man!!! I'm getting soooooooooo excited!!! My friends and I are heading up your way to dive Point Lobos on the 29th. We hope to dive Monastery, Butterfly House, and other sites too, either Friday or Sunday.

I dove Jade Cove last weekend, and conditions were less than perfect. Not only that, but the path leading down the cliff face has given way in many areas, as well as, alot of brush and poison oak growth. Went out at N. Monastery Wednesday afternoon and had absolutely spectacular conditions. The waves were mere ankle-slappers, so it was a trivial walk in and out on the beach. Once in, that water was BLUE. You can even see it from the highway now; everywhere I go around Monterey the ocean is a deep blue, so much so that it almost looks like Caribbean waters. The visibility at Monastery was around 50' from the top down as far as I could see. I took a student out for the PADI AOW deep dive, so we were limited to 100'. From my perch at 99', I could see way down into the canyon.

After the drive we drove around to Whaler's Cove and chatted a bit with the people washing their gear at the hose. They were reporting virtually identical conditions. Even Whaler's Cove looked clear and blue to me.

This all has me wondering...Last year on July 7 I went to Lobos and had easily 100' of visibility. My wife and I had been out on a Vision cruise over July 4 weekend, and all the way up Highway 1 from Santa Barbara we kept exclaiming over the blue ocean. It was too much to resist, so we stopped at Lobos and took it in. Interestingly, the water was a bit chilly--48F. And I recorded the same thing yesterday at Monastery--48F. So naievely I wonder...what is the connection between clear blue water, cold temperatures, and second week of July? I know two years in a row does not constitute a pattern, but still it's interesting.

Hmmmm...that is interesting. Although cold (49 degress) in Santa Barbara (Refugio State Beach), Morro Bay, and Jade Cove State Park the vis was horrible!!! Luckily, I usually shoot macro, so 5' is good enough for me.

As I said earlier, I'm getting so excited for my first diving trip to Monterey!!!
