I'll never get used to the idea that someone would trust a 12-yo to go alone in the forest with a 3-line rifle and drag back a deer, and not trust that same kid to check their air gauge so they don't drown themselves...

The Ultimate Bad Example
Having a compatible transmitter that you can sync your computer to is a good backup plan and you can't go wrong with shearwater computers. I would however encourage frequent buddy air checks to encourage his monitoring himself.
To get him in the habit of watching his guage try playing the air estimate game before looking at his guage have him estimate his air pressure you do the same and whoever is closer gets a point the one with the most points gets to pick the restaurant that night or whatever wager you want to use. Use a slate or wetnotes if needed just hand the slate to him he will write a pressure down next to yours then you do the air check and he holds the slate until he decides to challenge you back every 5-10 min throughout the dive. No cheating
