Oceanus:
Sometimes the cost, complexity, and failure points are worth it

[

Air integration is one of those things that I just dont *get*

When does the cost ,complexity and failure points make it worthwhile?
This is a serious question and I mean no disrespect but IMHO air integration (especially hoseless) is nothing more than an expensive gimmick.

Who needs it?

Please enlighten me :D

Who needs it... mindless divers who never check their gauges (and their unfortunate buddies)

AI is not a must have, and I would hope nobody needs AI, as divers should be checking their gauges periodically.

AI has 2 basic value adds; primary is the pressure alarm(s) (usually turn and end pressure), the other is the ability to compute RMV or SAC rate for a dive using the software and PC. We all know there are a lot of mindless divers who are probably saved by the low air alarm. In that scenario AI is being substituted for proper/safe diving technique.

Since Grumpy is also considering options for his teen sons it might be nice to have the extra safety of a low air alarm. A used AI can be had for under $200 on eBay, so cost can be mitigated as a factor.

There are many on this board with better knowledge of computers than myself, but I will give you an inexpensive idea to try regarding your eyesight if all you need is magnification:
Recently, I went to Walgreens (recommended by another SB member) and purchased a set of stick on bifocals. Mine happen to be 2.0 power but they have a variety of choices. They adhere to the mask with water and are removable if they don't fit your needs. The price was under $10.00. They seem to work quite well for me and will keep them in my spare mask since I don't want to spend the money on two sets of prescription lenses.

I've owned an AI computer for almost 10 years. Since becoming Nitrox trained, switching back to non AI. I agree, no one should need an AI. Was nice on my first series of deep dives over 100 ft deep providing air consumption rates at depth. My unit gives an air time along with the NDL. Again, not needed, nice to have. The only failure I had was a weak battery. When I reached the cold bottom ,the screen went blank, rose 10 feet, display worked. Computer did not stop working, screen could not be seen. Changed the battery, problem fixed. Computer never provided a low battery sign. Since then, I change the battery every one to two years.

A friend of mine has the same AI computer. Failed twice underwater. He will never use AI computer again.

Why buy them? Men love their toys. Scuba manufacturers can make money providing them. Wireless or hoseless units play to that "need". All the manufactures need to play this game to appear they are staying current. I seen a few divers with them. Doubt I will ever have one. I wonder if the hoseless units interfere with each other like portable house phones did several years ago. That would suck. However, you and I will not have that issue.
