I've been looking at getting a dive computer. After looking around and I'm down to three choices:

  • Oceanic Veo 180
  • Mares M1
  • Sherwood Courier
  • Genesis Source

I'm looking for basically a basic computer that would record the start of the dive, the duration of the dive, the end of the dive, and max depth. Nitrox compatibility would be nice but not essential for now.

I'd be interested to know about your experiences with those four computers.

If you like the Mares M1 you will also like the Dacor Darwin Wrist computer. It is
identical to the M1 except for the name printed on it and some minor changes
to the display. Mares bought Dacor and is merging the two lines The Dacor
version sell for a bit less money too.

The Oceananic, Sherwood and Genesis are all made by a company called "philagic" (sp?) which is owned by Oceanic and they are a lot alike.

So what you really have here is two choises "philagic" or "mares" and then which version of
each.

One thing you could try is to download the user manuals for each computer and read them. One might seem easier to operate

I don't think he is looking for a bottom timer.

Skip the Mares. It is way too conservative, more so than any other unit on the market. The others are more or less the same thing in different packages. The parent company is Pelagic Instruments and is affiliated with Oceanic and Aeris.

Thanks for all your responses. When I said a basic computer, I was indeed including bottom timers as well. However, the more I've been researching and the more I veer towards a real computer. Sounds also like the Mares is out.

Thanks for all your responses.

There are actually 2 versions of the M1. The old M1 and the M1 RGBM. The M1 RGBM is indeed the most conservative computer on the market (well, according to ScubaLab).
