Compressor rebuild - thread sealant

Hello guys, excellent forum I must say.

I am in the process of rebuilding from scratch a MCH6 COLTRI compressor and was wondering if I should use thread sealant on the fittings that go onto the cylinders and the filter and water separator casings.

Depends on what type of thread and method of sealing the fitting has. Straight threads sealed by either an O ring or gasket should not require a sealant. Taper pipe thread do require a sealant such as teflon tape. Flare or ferrule tubing connections not need a sealent but an anti sieze compound espically in the case of stainless steel is helpful.

I have used both, the liquid I use is Permatex thread sealant with Teflon.

We use a Teflon paste simply because we can wipe it clean and make it look good. But Teflon tape is fine.

One note, on all the head bolts and the forth stage head in particular, make sure to use a good graphite anti seize compound on the threads so it can come apart easy enough when you need to tear into it again.
