One of my consoles actually has the compass in front and you can see your bearing through the little window without having to look down at the console. It's a Sherwood and it looks like the compass holder might have been an option because it fits over and around the hose.
I used to use my compass regularly but not so much lately and I preferred the console method over the wrist-mount, however the back-of-the-hand idea sounds interesting.
