I used to teach orienteering, and found the mish mashed, glossed over approach, to compass work to be a bit lackng. However, after takikng a nav course as part of the AOW, it was a bit better explained, and I even managed to nod as of interested when the DI was telling me how to use the lubber line and bezel to shoot a bearing. Primative navigation, when compared to surface and land navigation.

But I got to agree, if the pilot/dive student didn't know this basic stuff, I'd be little inclined to fly with them.

The ring of numbers and the set of cardinal directions are different scales, numbers read from the side window and the direction arrow is to be read from above
