Anyone dove at Gilboa quarry lately? Am planing a trip there in a couple weeks. How is viz and temp? Shorty wetsuit OK? Anything to be aware of at this divesite? Is it better to dive weekdays or is viz still OK weekends?

Thanks,

Dan

The vis is always better thru the week. The weekends are ok but if you can go thru the week do it.

The temp is too cold for me for a shorty unless you stay above the thermo cline. I would say to get a full 3 or 5 mil to be comfortable. Safe diving. Mike put in 2 new docks and is working on more so getting in and out is a lot nicer. :jump3:

There are 3 new docks now on the shallow side, and a mostly finished/functional one on the deep side. (as of 3 weekends ago). Mike and the volunteers have done a bang-up job this summer on these and are to be commended.

Hood and gloves recommended below the thermocline, although I went without gloves and they didn't start to get really cold until the tubes.

Like 'mix said... viz will vary based on number of classes or amount of plummage that particular divers are inclined to generate.

I miss Gilboa :(

PS. I prefer it in a drysuit at all times.

Was just out there this weekend and my computer said 80 degree water to the first thermocline at about 20 feet. Was in the low 60's to the next thermocline then I saw 49 degrees at 70 feet. I was comfortable in a shortie above 20 feet (I dive a 1/4" suit in Florida in June) so that's saying something  Gilboa is the premier site in the area, there are lots of rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, bluegill, largemouth bass, a huge catfish, yellow perch and rock bass. There are plenty of things to see both large and small, I've been diving there 10 years now and keep coming across little things I have never seen like the pink flamingo and the deciduous tree that has large christmas lights strung on it.

The fish know diver's mean food and they come in a hurry when you tap on the top of the bus because that's where most people feed them. There weren't very many people there this weekend, maybe the weather kept them away. The visibility was good, especially in the mornings and on the night dive Friday night.

The new docks are really nice, Mike has also replaced the deck where the gear tables are.
